Meta-cognitive Reflection of Semester One

Throughout this semester I truly believe I have grown as a writer from when I started in September. This is so because I have attempted to reach outside of the box and ask help from my peers for editing and proofreading. I have also practiced writing more essays and responses on different themes and styles; especially in class and have learned from my mistakes. The good thing is that I am noticing the same mistakes redundantly so that I know to focus on just that area. I have improved on using adequate language that suits the topic at hand which also makes me sound more sophisticated as is. But I think I should further improve on analysis and connecting my ideas to real world concepts and themes. In other words, emphasizing the 'So What?' in what we write. I plan to accomplish this by creating a connection of what we read to asking ourselves why it matters in our society and what are some measures that we can take to resolve the issue. I am really proud of the Crucible test short answer because I got a full score on it and could see many improvements compared to my previous essays where I would lose one or two points.
I think Ms. Nagi can further assist me by providing more specific comments when grading my essays/responses so that I can see exactly what I need to improve on and what I excelled in.

  1. It is great that you improved in your writing this semester Emily! Practicing and experimenting with writing is probably one of the best ways to improve your writing. I too struggle with connecting what I am writing about to the big picture idea. I think that is the hardest part about writing an essay because it is not found straight in the text because you must come up with it yourself. Great job this semester!

  2. Glad you're seeing improvement! I had some of the same issues, like emphasizing the "so what?" and having just one problem that continued to occur. Keep trying new things! If you keep seeing the same mistakes, then clearly something needs to change. I hope you continue to see improvement throughout the rest of this year:)
