The Existence of Freedom in America... Believe It? Or Not?

"O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?" Even our national anthem says freedom is a part of what it takes to be American. According to former President George W Bush, he stated " defend our freedom... bring freedom to others." If freedom is so important in the lives of Americans, then why wasn't it given to them in the past? A large event that paints this controversy nicely was the practice of slavery since the 18th and 19th centuries. In former President Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, he invoked a new outlook in abolishing slavery. “A nation conceived in liberty, but should have a new birth of freedom." His fight for providing freedom for African American slaves should not have even taken place if the American constitution says, " hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness….” What are we to make of this in our constitution? Have our founding fathers lied to us? Equality is what drives us into freedom. And the so called ‘rights’ that our Creator gave us: Life, Liberty and Happiness are all what an individual deserves to have which can also be said as freedom. Even though, we say we have freedom of speech, freedom of press, freedom of religion, etc., there is still some hidden persecution of minorities. Only, it was African Americans then, Asian Americans a bit after that and Muslim Americans now. If they aren’t receiving the freedom, equality and democratic rights that everyone else are getting, then is America truly a nation with equality? Then is America truly a democratic nation? Is America truly a nation with liberty and justice for all? "God Bless America."

  1. I like that you connected the constitution with slavery and how freedom and liberty have evolved over time. I agree that it's hard to know whether our founding fathers lied or not. They didn't consider African Americans men, so does that technically mean that all men indeed were created equal? It's a tough call for sure. Further, I like the way you differentiated freedom and liberty in your post because they are not simply interchangeable. Do you think the founding fathers viewed the two concepts as separate as well?
