The Psychology Behind Our Environment

" The degree to which we are all involved in the control of the earth's life is just beginning to dawn on most of us...meaning another revolution for human thought" (Thomas 195). This quote was taken from Lewis Thomas's essay Natural Man in which he discusses the way in which humans unknowingly have got themselves involved in the happenings of the environment. I found this quote to be particularly interesting as it sets up a strong claim that would later be dissected throughout the essay. Which are humans constantly are debating about the hazardous conditions they live in and that our environment is in danger due to pesticides, pollution, extinct species, etc. But they do not realize that these very same issues are caused only by humans and that they are also involved in the reasons of destruction in the environment. My Three Englishes: That Are Not Only Englishes

Out of all the languages spoken in our world today, English continues to be the most prevalent and judgmental language in our society. There are many variations of it for each individual. As Amy Tan puts it the different “Englishes.” Being born in India and raised in Japan for part of my childhood and then moving to the United States exposed me to many cultures and languages. From the day I learned to talk, my parents spoke to me in Tamil; one of the many languages that are spoken in India. When I moved to Japan, I was forced to learn Japanese because the schools taught the curriculum in Japanese. While I was juggling between these two languages, an Indian couple who was our neighbor spoke Bengali and they spoke to me in Bengali. From what my parents told me, I was cognizant of the time and place and switched to the appropriate language that best suits the situation. Meta-cognitive Reflection of Semester One

Throughout this semester I truly believe I have grown as a writer from when I started in September. This is so because I have attempted to reach outside of the box and ask help from my peers for editing and proofreading. I have also practiced writing more essays and responses on different themes and styles; especially in class and have learned from my mistakes. The good thing is that I am noticing the same mistakes redundantly so that I know to focus on just that area. I have improved on using adequate language that suits the topic at hand which also makes me sound more sophisticated as is. But I think I should further improve on analysis and connecting my ideas to real world concepts and themes. In other words, emphasizing the 'So What?' in what we write. I plan to accomplish this by creating a connection of what we read to asking ourselves why it matters in our society and what are some measures that we can take to resolve the issue. I love walking in the woods in the summertime. Especially late in the afternoon. As I was doing the very same near the banks of the Mississippi, I came across a raft; that was aimlessly floating on the shore. "O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?" Even our national anthem says freedom is a part of what it takes to be American. According to former President George W Bush, he stated " defend our freedom... bring freedom to others." If freedom is so important in the lives of Americans, then why wasn't it given to them in the past? A large event that paints this controversy nicely was the practice of slavery since the 18 th and 19 th centuries. In former President Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, he invoked a new outlook in abolishing slavery. “A nation conceived in liberty, but should have a new birth of freedom." Religion has always been and always will be a topic of controversy. Due to the fact that so many people are failing to realize that God is one benefactor who loves his creations and is only striving to give us the best. I will explain the way I view religion in this post. I was born and raised as a Muslim; my parents and relatives were brought up the same way. Just like in the Bible, the Quran references the story of Adam and Eve ( Hawwa  The Story of Adam Pt. 2 of 5 The Creation of Eve) and despite the warning of God to not eat the fruit from the forbidden tree, ["... come not near this tree or you both will be of the wrongdoers." Both the Bible and the Quran are very similar; both being Abrahamic religions, we share many similarities.
